April 4th Gathering in Florence — update

While preparing a Spring and Summer actual schedule *smile* we thought to invite a few friends for tonight.

In lieu of publishing my review of Jan’s third book, (I’d prefer to read/review a second book, covering the time from her first book until now.  Seeing how forthcoming and open and honest she was in her first book.), I’m inviting folks to a private quiet gathering in Florence, tonight, arrive 7:30 actual start, 8:00 Friends and new people (!) and companions.   mwalsh7782@yahoo.com or txt me 1 646 204-7849

It’s not a talk nor darshan but a gathering of companionship where people, and people who enjoy sangha and Satsang have an opportunity to meet or speak with Michael.  You too might find having him closely available is a tad more helpful than listening in public events, without needing to book a private session.

We will be in a private apartment, BRING FRIENDS and anyone interested, though this isn’t the best setting for total beginners then again maybe you know someone where this informal type thing is perfect.

No donation expected.

( I will be local until I’ve done all scheduled sessions, so if you have the time and intention, here is the universe responding to you!)

READ ABOUT THE EVENTS WE’RE
DOING THIS WEEKEND!

Things are changing quickly.

Recently I’ve been trying out “Crazy Wisdom”, but only in texting and the last few days on the website.  It doesn’t work in text, just real life. I’m mostly done. Crazy Wisdom is too chaotic in text/web form. It needs to be personal. So not much entertainment of that kind will find you here. I do regret you cannot read Jan’s poem, it made absolutely clear what can happen when empty people are around. Too bad.

I asked JAN FRAZIER what she would write for a cover if I wrote a book, to get a sense of what she thought of me. This is what she wrote:

“Michael Walsh is the most profoundly awake person I have ever encountered. He has lived in this awareness of the truth for many years. He is searingly intelligent, careful and articulate in his expression, and delightfully irreverent. He is unerringly honest.

But what you feel in his presence, above all other qualities, is that he is loving. To have that boundless heart in a being who is this awake, and with a rigorous intelligence that functions only in the service of love, is a rare blessing. When Michael expresses himself from that awakeness, the very deepest part of you says yes, this is so. It’s as if he’s articulating something you didn’t know you knew — until now.

Meeting Michael Walsh has been one of my life’s great good fortunes. My sense of myself as an awake person, and as a spiritual teacher, has been profoundly challenged and enriched by him.

Michael does not appear, on first impression, to be “spiritual.” He does not look or behave like a holy man. He comes of no tradition and promotes no practice or set of beliefs. In fact, his gentle urging is to look at who you are unburdened of beliefs.

I want others to be touched by him as I have been. His presence is a pure blessing in this world.”

Recently I’ve been trying out “Crazy Wisdom”, but only in texting and the last few days in response to a nonsense letter from a former love. I’m mostly done. In India there is a careful system of guidance and preparation for the newly awakened which requires extended periods of contemplation heavily guided by “elders” who are already enlightened and can recognize the landmarks of maturation and readiness within their students to become teachers. This can take years. In the West we have no such system. I have noticed a distinct difference between matured and newborn teachers no matter how they package their message.

Living with One who has been awake for a long time and has the wisdom gained (enlightenment) from that “level”, (not that there are really levels but one must use language in an attempt to point at something), I get a ringside seat of his vision. I understand that there is awake-ness and there is the human and that both things co-exist, in an odd mutually exclusive way. This awake person continues to function in a very human way with preferences, thoughts, feelings, and reactions, the whole gamut. On the surface it can resemble any ego driven creature, but fundamentally it is radically different.

.
For lack of direct experience, most have unconscious but detailed expectations and ideas of what awake-ness should look like on an operating level. Michael may appear to fall so far short of those ideas, that it can result in confusion, doubt, and ultimately, rejection. People can be shocked when they discover how human Michael can be. He makes no effort to hide that. Being detached, means there’s no need be secretive or defend, and he is honest with whatever he is thinking and feeling at the moment.

.
Michael’s teaching focuses upon the actual condition of awakening as opposed to the fairytale.
Your ability to learn about this requires that you be able to leave your ego at the door so that you can fully listen. If you have a teacher active in your life who gets you wondering in any way about the authenticity of their enlightenment, then you are stuck in ego and will miss what s/he has to offer. Taking the time to find out more about him / her is really important, so that you can resolve your wondering and make full use of the opportunity — or leave. Your questions should include these. Is their awake-ness abiding or have they just had a few episodes? If abiding, then for how long? When did they begin to teach? Because a newly awakened person needs to integrate the shift and to begin the process of becoming enlightened, (the wisdom gained only after awakening, that comes from contemplating with the awakened mind). This takes time, usually years. So, if they do start teaching immediately they really have nothing to offer but the still unexamined recycling of what they knew before. There are many of these teachers working right now, during the most vulnerable period of their own development who are the least qualified to guide others.

Yes! Laura, thank you – you nailed it in your ring-side description of Michael. How the human and the awake-ness “co-exist, in an odd mutually exclusive way,” and people unconsciously assume awake-ness should look like something different than Michael. 🙂
People can be shocked when they discover how human Michael can be,” you say. I know that experience, and the other experience: what Jan describes in her note/poem to him.

“Michael does not appear, on first impression, to be “spiritual.”  He does not look or behave like a holy man. He comes of no tradition and promotes no practice or set of beliefs.  In fact, his gentle urging is to look at who you are unburdened of beliefs.”

Michael’s definition for “AWAKENING” is:

“ A change which happens within a persons consciousness or brain, where in illumination happens and the minds clarity becomes free of fogs, filtering judgments, etc. The world is seen as-it-is. The “I” delusion falls away.” (Pg 21 Ego Attachment…)

His expansive definition for “ENLIGHTENMENT” is:

“The wisdom attained, restudied, learned AFTER spiritual awakening. This Absolutely means taking the time to review ALL old beliefs, practices and attainments and throw them all out, saving only what is needed to function and communicate. CERTAINLY there is No Room for teaching their “OLD” stuff — if it was any value, why would they need wake up? To teach the same old junk? Of course not. Yet they continue to do it, right in the face of failure. Why? Because although they still have (and cherish) the sensation of “no questions” or “all-knowing” they conveniently fail (because their ego is already returning because it’s necessary to operate in the world after all — but ego doesn’t let them notice itself) — so there they are thinking if they have an old belief it must be true, because then they (ego) gets to teach it to people. And they get to wear special clothes, crystal pendants, do wavy-hand things and such. They get attention and they get to PERFORM!! And “friends” start looking up to them and encourage them deeper into the morass. Those are big inducements to forget the new life, and work for it, but instead slide back, thinking they’re still (whatever they are thinking about themselves)!
With some careful attention, one will quickly realize that the newly Awakened person has had no time whatsoever to learn anything new so they cannot yet have acquired awakened wisdom (enlightenment), nor even have had time to evaluate whether any of their old sacred beliefs are still valid within their new in-sight. But the old beliefs are not valid. There is only one truth. And only expert-type study enables a person to carefully speak of The One Truth while using words which tear it to pieces. A hard undertaking that no amateur wake-up can do. Sorry folks, you’re being horn-swoggled by unethical bandits! Funny thing, huh?” (expanded on pg 22 Ego Attachment…)

In the East, where people believe in reincarnation, it is considered without question that it takes lifetimes to move from Awakenings to Enlightenment. Of course, in the pre-educated West we know it can happen as little as five or six years. But not six months….or, — 6 days, dear God, save us from our saviors! . . :-]

Judgements and Labels Solidify Your World

The Second Patriarch of Zen, Hui-k’o, who received the bowl and robe from the First Patriarch that signified the Transmission of the Lineage of the Dharma, after some forty years, passed them on to the Third Patriarch. He then went around everywhere drinking and carousing like a wildman and partaking in the offerings of the brothel districts. When people asked how he could do such a thing, being a Patriarch of Zen and all, he would respond with: “What business is it of yours?”
– – – – HUI-K’O: The Second Patriarch in the Chinese Lineage
———————————————————–

What if you dropped your labels of things?  What if a chair was just simply what you saw and felt and experienced?  No ideas about it to flow from having labeled it.  What if you couldn’t judge anybody or anything?  Then you could only be with the world as it is.  You couldn’t even create worry or trouble nor could you resist those further to the point of suffering.  Everything would be just-as-it-is.  Just As It Is.  That’s what the world is already, of course.  Just as it is.  But it is not your ideas of it, your labels, or any of that.  And since it is not those things, it’s always out of reach.  Sometimes it feels barely out of reach, but it gets no closer.  Because the universe is not just going to metamorphize to suit your carefully crafted, stored judgements.  And to feel secure and be sure about the judgements, the mind hides them and denies them — then they feel so self-evident that when someone like me pokes a hole right through them, the mind goes blank.  (Spiritual people sometimes turn to the word ‘discernment’ to get around this.)

I asked a couple of what-if questions above and I’ll answer them.  The answer is that you’d feel awake, alive and maybe, just maybe, one with that non-judged universe.  For seekers, that means Awakening and the beginning of the journey towards enlightenment.

I left my Hermitage in arid Northern California after four or so years and came East, out into the world, on a request.  I was assured people wanted to hear straight-forward truth without the phony needy grasping spiritual varnish.  Ya know, I saw an advertisement yesterday that said that buying their shelves (shelves!) would make my home more enlightening!  Honest to god.  Anyhow, what I found was that the closer seekers got to the truth, the more they froze up, sometimes not even fearfully, but froze like a computer lock-up.  I have a sort of new friend who I really like, who getting to know me, thinks s/he knows Me (as if there is someone in here other than the construction I use to talk and interact) and txting me today said, “It feels like this judgment thing is pretty big for you  ” and I felt a sinking.  Christ, can’t people remember it’s all a mirror?  Probably s/he is on the edge of seeing their own judgments so it’s a very sticky area for them.  Yes, I like to watch judgments and labels like a hawk. And it’s My Job to talk about it all. This one, wanting to prove to her ego she is “as good as him” tried to talk to me as an equal. We are equal as people, yes, but that does not make her Awake nor does it make me not Enlightened. Ego had crazy thinking, boy oh boy. Observing with intensity and insight they will never grasp, I’m stuck seeing their games, I’m stuck watching them throw away new friendships, with me in this case, just to try for an ego-hit. I usually give it to them so they’ll go away. If I like them, I give them a mental-bonk and years of hard times, as they struggle to grasp one-liners I give them. Sometime it works pretty damned well, if they’re trying. Another friend has gone girlie and ….oh, that’s for another time. He’s not a teacher and now never will be. Took the opposite road On Purpose. I can see what is going on in me and especially what is going on around me: the person on the other side of the table, for instance.

He sat across the table and watched me.  We were (on the surface) getting re-acquainted and I watched him work up to judging me.  What I had always seen in him was his hiding behind “looking up to me” when in fact he was jealous.  Not envious which would have been fine — of course anyone, upon meeting someone free, would want that too.  But jealousy is wanting the other person NOT to have it.  So my erstwhile friend decided “he’s just like anyone else” (which I had tried to scream into his ear for a year) BUT — his version was to negate me.  He was saying to himself, he’s not awake/special/valuable, he’s nobody, just like anybody, and certainly no-one to listen to.  He had managed his escape from seeing himself, which, of course, is the job of everyone asleep.  It’s like he got up the “courage” to overdose on Ambien.

Today, I had a catchup txting with someone who had come and stayed over with me and one thing I asked was about the most important thing we had explored, “the face” people put on for others.  You can see it especially in teachers who aren’t ready for satsang but are doing it anyway.  A kind of frozen smile face.  Some of them try to be loving and of course the needy people project on that person up there in the seat that they ARE “loving” them in a big way.  Now the seeker is a follower and the back-to-sleep teacher, says to themselves, “I must have done good.”  Actually, it is “I got away with it.”

I know.  I know because I have found myself in that situation, and not being willing to put on a face, screwed the whole thing up.  About half the people dug it, but no matter, I was judged up the ying-yang.  One “mover and shaker” was so put off, Six Months later he wrote an email criticizing me, including, and get this, He Meant It, that I was a bad person because smoking cigarettes is a bad example for children!  I thought, “What the F!  Am I on the DARE team or something?”

A friend of mine, half my age and mostly being a non-seeker, and I went to see a lady speaker.  She mentioned satsang (which is the discourse of truth) and 30n minutes later my friend leans over and whispers, “She’s just counseling these people!”  And I replied, “Amazing, isn’t it?  And she and they think this is the real thing.”  The nice lady rolls into town, smiley-face on, sure of herself but the relief she gives is, “Oh!  It’s not going to be hard, I can just take it easy and be lovey!”  — another year delay in waking up.  My same friend, she comes to NYC to see Jeff Foster (he’s her age and cute and British to boot) and within minutes he’s struggling and my friend leans over again.  Once you get honest you can see a lot.  Actually, everything.  Jeff needs to go home, sit in emptiness (if he can still find it) until he’s matured some enlightenment into his brain.  But he probably won’t because people in his position rarely have a mentor, just non-awakes around them who tell them they are doing great.  But he wasn’t.  He knows something’s ‘off’ but he doesn’t know how to fix whatever it is.

So what AM I talking about here?  Essentially, to communicate, we have to use language.  But the very language and judging etc. catch us in a web.  And for people who wake up and don’t take the time to learn anything new, when they drop down from awake-empty-oneness, down into language, they put on the remnants of their old “me” costume (and face) but they think they’re still awake/empty and so just must have something to say!  But operating back on planet not-awake, they don’t see what’s happened. Whatever they teach is all mostly based on their past, or what some stone-age guru passed on as a “lineage”, and they never feel right.  Very few people get this, but some do.  And there are some who refuse to teach because they see the pit, even if they don’t understand.  So they stay quiet.  Good.

Enlightenment is not love.  That is called love.  Enlightenment is what you learn after an awakening.  Sometimes only after several awakenings.  If you want love, yes, go find someone who is smiley-facing for a few years until they figure it out.  But, your “donations” will never get you a ticket to empty. And they’re not going to track you down and apologize and return your donations. Emptiness.  It’s not hidden behind love.  It’s hidden behind your judgments and labels.  So you’re likely not going to like your best teacher much, at first.  Me, I keep them moving even if it seems brutal and I also love them along as much as I can, proud of their courage, and try to always be available.

Yesterday, an awake woman asked me to be her master.  (She has the Hindu vocabulary, so I had no problem with the word “master”, I understood she just needed someone who could help.)  She’s not trying to teach.  She sort of could, better than most out there, but she wants to dive deeply into the empty and what she finds can be confusing.  She’s very brave.  Most people, when they wake up, fall for the pitfalls and friends and bullshit, but . . . . I am blessed to be working with a few people I don’t have to tiptoe around their judging and manipulating and lieing.  I look forward to a fun time.  If YOU wake up, it’s just the beginning of an authentic life!  Read Merrill Wolf.

Enough.  I’m tired.  These kinds of posts, although the best and most important feel to me almost like a fire and brimstone sermon.  To wake people up.  Don’t we all need that some time?

Oh yeah, Jan Frazier will be in NYC!  Don’t miss it.

Sangha

I have amended the last paragraph, below, and corrected the video linkage. June 10, 2012

The people I work with today are the monks and nuns of this era. Everyone has education today.  But for the ancients, it was not so easy to find help to awaken or reach enlightenment, people who had education.  And those people were to be found in monasteries.  So if you visited them, you became a monk.  We are not limited like they were. We are educated. We’ve been seeking for some time. We have already had insights.  We, as we come together with the priority of Awakening, are rightfully the monks of today. We are surrounded by New Age religionists, there are “teachers” all around who have one taste and mistook it, as Adyashanti says, abiding awareness. No awake person can even speak a word without putting on an ego suit. They speak from what they believed before their first insight and thinking they are “awake” even when wearing their ego. Real enlightenment is humble and knowing we don’t know, knowing “get rid of all beliefs!” knowing to teach only what came to them after awakening. Wisdom. Even fools wisdom. Letting others judge, not objecting, until they see their judgement in themselves.

View the sections of the PBS video below, and give special attention to the part where his friends didn’t believe his (Buddha’s) enlightenment because he wasn’t following the traditional “spiritual path.” He had to convince them . . . he was still just a man, enlightened people don’t start floating around and glowing!  (Notice in Christianity Jesus had to perform miracles before people would believe his new message.)  But Buddha had found the true path, the unadulterated path, for men and women, and he invited them all to learn.  And they came with him and they began to meet as a sangha.
After enlightenment, the Buddha, in compassion, wanted to share what he had found. But it was not so easy, he was alone and had never been a teacher.
It took the Buddha many many years to find his way … but … he didn’t want it to be so hard for people. And so he established a community (a sangha -ed.) that could live together and help one another,” the narrator Jane Hirschfield, poet, says.

If you have determination to move forward, you have to meet the challenge and look around and then accept the teacher you find, the one who shows up — not the one your ego picks through because the person is “sweet” or something. If you’re not careful, you’ll end up with someone like this: Well, sorry, you don’t HAVE to accept any teaching, of course! Here’s a nice television . . . if you’d rather have that over the Pamela’s and Jeff’s, and Jeanie’s of the world. Pay attention to the first part of Buddha’s teaching (The BUDDHA’S TEACHINGS!) beginning in the videos below, what is going on there with the people looking at the Buddha who didn’t have all the “spiritual” window-dressing – – – watch what He did. For them to succeed they had to quit judging the Buddha and open their minds. People can judge themselves right out off their own path, when the teacher who shows up is not what they expected.  When the student is ready, the teacher they are ready for appears!

If Jesus walked down the streets today, he’d get arrested (Middle East Revolutionary!) OMG a terrorist! And if a buddha showed up in your life, how would you know? You’d know because s/he’d shake you up. So when that happens, are you going to resist or join?

Video ► The second half of this video (at 2 minutes 35 seconds) describes the first resistance he encountered from people which he had to overcome to begin his teaching — when people expected an enlightened being to be miraculous instead of a normal human being.

Then, the beginning of this next video shows how his old friends address him as an equal, and he corrects them and says, “No, that is not the term you should use when you address a Tathāgata.” The teaching has begun, and this is the first lesson: Listen. Learn. The students had to accept the teacher so that they themselves could stop their egoic thoughts and Learn. Only the ego wants to jump into a position it doesn’t hold (“He’s just a man, I’m as good as him!”). We are all the same in value, but some have something valuable to teach seekers, and seekers do not. So the very first lesson was humble acknowledgement of the Buddha’s having become the Tathāgata. Not easy for his former aesthetic brother ‘equals’ at first, but quick advancement could happen no other way.

Non-Level Levels

Consciousness has no levels.  You are either conscious or not.  However, you have to become highly conscious, one way or another to begin the series of insights that provide the deeper experience which “wakes you up.” Using language, people tend to use the word “levels” to indicate these and other things, so I’m going to use the word here, too.  But there are no actual levels out there any more than there are levels to a roller-coaster ride.  They are what they are.  So when I use the word “levels” it’s exactly like me using my finger to point at the moon.  I certainly don’t mean for you to think I think my finger is the moon!

The basic levels can be thought of “low to high”; unconscious, conscious, awake, empty.  If an empty person chooses to engage in human social life (like talking with you) then s/he has to come down a few levels to meet you where language is.  So we can talk.

For example; when an empty no-body, for some reason chooses to put attention on the world level. The first thing to show up is a very light sense of “preference”.  Descending a little more, the preference becomes stronger, as in “liking” one peach over another, further down and the sensation of “want sets in.  The deeper the descent the heavier it gets, very similar to the transition from  empty outer space into the atmosphere.  Or steam rising from a cooking pot, down to the broth, to soup, then stew. Reality is thicker, condensed and can become a slog through the mud of life.
The deeper one goes (remember, “levels”), the harder it is to remember emptiness.  This is a particular challenge for a newly awake person who cannot go too far down without risk of losing sight of the liberation they have at the real level, what most people would call the highest and enlightened level, yet is only the beginning.  Most teachers (who are mostly of few years experience awake) either get the habit of not “coming down”, or pretend they are still empty, when in fact they are back in the soup with the rest of us.  As if!  If you think about that with good attention, you’ll easily see how so many teachers are fucked up.  What they need to do is acknowledge they’re in the soup, too.  Which is what I do and I make it no secret that when I’m engage in the soup level I see I have the biggest ego ever!  Only a person operating as ego can even use language, Talk!  So what we do in satsang is sit quietly, come gently back and only so far as required to permit connection and speech.

Seekers have such terrible time seeking enlightenment because they’re trying to leap-frog over the passage: ◙ being highly conscious, ◙ having insights and awakenings, ◙ focusing into the empty, and ◙ becoming Abiding Empty Awareness.  It’s like someone who wants to see the Grand Canyon but refuses to go there, take a train or drive, or even set aside the time.  Maybe expecting magic to manifest the Grand Canyon outside their door!

So.  I say unto you, become highly conscious.

Exercise.  Stand in the middle of a room where you won’t be disturbed.  Make no movement until after you’ve stated out loud what you will do.  “I am going to raise my arm.” and then do it.  Then a new statement and deliberate movement.  If something happens you did not say you’d do happens, like your head turns to look around, Stop — and return your head straight.  After a enough times doing this exercise you can become deliberate and conscious and get a good feel for it as you learn to be a Highly Conscious Person.  The type of person who is likely to begin Legitimately helpful insights and, hopefully, awakenings.  Next step (NOT announcing you’re enlightened!) is to fully Awaken, which will happen on it’s own.  Focus on the Awakened state until you are in Abiding Awareness.

Once a being is Awake, they see how mistaken the whole “regular world” and their entire past life was.  Even the spiritual teachings they learned and beloved beliefs,  poof!!!  All gone.  Empty.  Have to start learning From The Point Of Awakening.  After a few years of learning post-Awakening things, you may become enlightened.  But you’ll be the last to say it.

Do not try to tell yourself you are something you are not yet — this is highly un-manly and un-womanly.  It’s high school type cheating.  Don’t pretend you are Highly Conscious because it won’t help, it’s a waste of time.  Hell, if faking it would help, I’d tell you to do that!  But it doesn’t.  Going to sessions or events all peaceful and quiet-looking just to make people think you’re advanced will just set you back.  You have to show up for real so you can get the feedback that fits.  Show up as something else and the feedback won’t fit.

I plan on expanding this post another time.

Ego-Attachment– The Route Of All Suffering* * * * * My new book Ego-Attachment– The Route Of All Suffering is now available in print or as an Electronic eBook! Frankly, I feel this is some of the best writing I’ve ever printed. I go into the heart of the matter and state the case in few uncertain terms. That is, I speak my truth.

Testimonials. We haven’t collected any but please feel free to “Comment” to this message or send an email. However. I’m delighted to report, one of us has had an awakening. She bought one of the first copies of the book, and when she read to half-way through the last page of “Origin” section, she experienced her mind stopping completely. In the following days, she has continued experiencing the emptiness of emptiness and bliss. This is a very private time, as well, so of course we can’t just rush over and start asking questions, but I’m very pleased she is journaling and sharing. It’s sort of funny, but while her email about her enlightenment experience was on the screen, we were speaking here at the center of the universe about developing these web pages and I commented that the website didn’t have any “recommendations” or testimonials for the book and someone started laughing and just pointed at the screen. Before we had even gotten to the point of collecting people’s responses for testimonials about the book, someone had woken up reading it! Well, that seems a pretty good testimonial! *smile*

But of course, no-one can say what “caused” an awakening. This wonderful person has been attentively seeking for many years, has studied under Jan Frazier, where I think she shifted into the high-level person I met when she came to my events, too, at Jan’s recommendation. She woke herself up. She woke up her self. Whatever, we’ll have to wait and see what she has to say, if anything, if ever. So don’t think reading one book WILL do it, it’s just that you never know, So Keep Going, start and don’t stop. If not my book, someone else’s. Be SURE to read Jan’s book first.

By the way, under the ABOUT heading at the top-right of the main page, is information about new satsang schedules, planned new books, chance to join a many-week sangha peering sangha retreat (one three hour period a week with the same people every week, for Learning, Awakening, and Companionship) and more on the these pages.

Retreat: Karuna

The 22nd, Sunday Retreat, at Karuna was a bit of fun.  Not so much unexpected, but peoples settled into a pleasant space of self-reflection, which I’ve rarely witness happen so easily and quickly.  It was also a joy to be with other awakeneds, and this has inspired me to schedule the PEERING Groups as soon as possible.  I know I’ve been remiss in this scheduling, and I’m sorry.

For people to get together and not just listen or follow teaching, but to share With Each Other, bring questions to the teachers, yes, but also, begin to really get a feel for doing this without a “Teacher” because when you wake up, you’re on your own, as we at Karuna witnessed.

(Janny is off in the Maine wilderness enjoying a well-deserved “break” and sabbatical.  )

We’ve scheduled about twice as many Green River Yoga events as before.  All the last-Sundays of the month and few others for fun.

We’re planning a ten-week weekly Gathering.

With all these scheduled, I’m finally in a position to accept the invitations from Boston, Westborough, Williamstown, NYC, Albany, Amherst, etc.  One of the good things is we’ve been able to leave a lot of good dates open to follow up on these invitations.

This is just a quick-off blog, to fill in information.

(If you own a webserver and could offer a little room, I’m nearly ready to develop the new interactive teaching site.)

Facts facts facts.  But what do they have to do with YOU, with Consciousness?  Never forget, this is the work we do, showing up for our own lives!

I Love You.

Be SURE to read Jan’s book .

Awakening Retreat August 22nd

Love is the willingness to create space to allow something to change.

Karuna Yoga Studio is a splendid space for freedom, realizations, for shifts happening and eyes alive with wonder.  So Yes, we create this space, just a few days away, the 22nd, don’t forget to wake up Sunday morning for the Awakening Retreat in Northampton at Karuna yoga studio (directions.)   We’ve scheduled from  9 to 5, a little bit early for some folk.  Although in fact, since we have the facility so early, we’ll be taking a gently gradient beginning… also so that late-comers don’t impact the event.

This will be my first full-day event since a weekender in Berlin in 2001!  The description in English [scroll down] and German, still worth reading.  I expect Sunday to be free-flowing and serious in a fun way.  Meaning, lots of understanding nods and appreciation.

Much of  our time together will be together…  will be experiential, as in, exercises to explore both perception and the sort of “how” of conclusions.  How conclusion-ing is done.  Sometimes one small thing slips in and has bigger results than imagined.  It’s often through conclusions getting affected or slanted.  Anyway, it will be a bit about that as well.

There will be some experiential exercises done outside during Lunch Break, as well.

The Karuna Retreat is sliding scale, from 60 to 100, many settling at 85. If you would like to advance-register, send me an email and if you can use PayPal, my email address to use at PayPal.com is mwalsh7782@yahoo.com But we want no-one left out, so please contact us.  We’ve been very pleased with the comfort level people have shown to share enough to work things out well.  Amazing beings!  Because this is the first event I’ve ever arranged over the internet, Registration has been confusing for people, I know.  I’m sorry.  I’m going to have it functioning very well very soon.  I am considering all inquiries and emails as if the person intended to register.  Pre-registration is no longer needed, so I’m comfortable accepting anyone and everyone who arrives with a ready heart.

This is a bring-your-own-lunch event, though some of us may wish to eat at one of the local places downstairs.  For those with their own lunch, and the desire, the gathering space will be Contemplative Lunch time, if possible.  Please have a breakfast beforehand or grab a granola bar or two on the way.

I so much want also to do something Jan Frazier (superlatives) has been asking for quite a while, doing a session where I just give only deep personal feedback, from emptiness here to emptiness and space in you.  It’s the best thing I can do, I’m told.  Still, we want to be varied and have fun and when the day is done feel like we’ve really experienced Good Stuff and smiling with the world again.  It won’t be me talking and “holding forth” all day.

Parking.  WHERE TO PARK — not always so easy, in Northampton. People can park legally in the FAR BACK section of the parking lot behind Karuna.

I’m pretty sure there are plenty of cushions and chairs in the studio, so people shouldn’t need to bring sitting things, but if you have a favorite cushion….   oh, the studio is two flights up, but they’re very nice stairs.

The elevator is kept locked, so PLEASE, if you need wheelchair access, please let us know so we can arrange for an elevator operator.

“Love is an expression of the willingness to create space in which something is allowed to change.” -Harry Palmer This Awakening Retreat is the love-expression of the willingness . . . . . and this event is the result.  It becomes the space . . . for You.  That is, here before you, the announcement of this event, is the expression of my willingness to create space for beings, including You, especially You, to evolve, to change, to move in the direction your heart leads and your head has a glimpse.  It is true I do this for living, but it is also true that WHAT I do is FOR peoples.  I do NOT alter it to fit my interests.  My greatest happiness is to see people graduate “past” me (though I do hope they drop by now and then!)

Oh geez, I see I’m writing out the whole thing!  Welp!  I hope to see you there!

A Postscript

Regarding human sentience, the brain is what the body does. The mind is what the brain does. And YOU are what the mind does.

The brain springs into existence because the body grows it. When the brain starts running on all its cylinders, what you end up with is a mind. What your mind gets busy creating is a you.

The last part is what we are interested in here. You are the creation of your mind. It’s what minds do. Don’t take it personally; after all, you know that the first thing the mind did was decide it was special! It made a thinker and it created specialized thinking-about-yourself-thinking called ego. Because this thinking is all it can do, it believes it’s own thoughts are reality. Which they are To It. But none of these things is the essential you, any more than you are your physical possessions. You are not your personal attributes, either. I could tell you the same kind of story about your blood and heart system, but you don’t think you are your blood, do you? No, because the heart pumps blood, it doesn’t think beliefs. The “you” you think you are is only just what the mind is doing, that’s all. If this upsets you, take a walk. (Because really the objection is, “What? I made up all that thinking stuff for nothing?” So it creates some “I’m offended” thoughts and blame them on someone [else].) If you simply don’t understand what I am saying, boot up your computer. See it come alive. Now shut it down. All that stuff the computer was doing is “gone,” not happening, finito. What you were watching was what the computer was DOING, not what the computer IS. It’s just a machine – hardware, metal, and silicone, connected with wires and the whole mess housed in a box and powered by electricity. Whereas the human organic central processing unit is made of gray and white mushy brain cells connected with nerve fibers and carefully housed in a special cocoon-like cranium which is mounted on a body powered by chemical digestion. But when you see either of these computers come on – what they do in action, oh boy!

On the first level there is a gross level of bodily meat and nerve and brain cells. A consciousness manifests within the functioning of this bodily unit. And finally, pure awareness can happen spontaneously or by exploring this consciousness.

Here’s how it works.

With its infinite potential to be anything, the mind starts doing stuff, at first just in response to things. The act of noticing something is the first step to its no longer “being” what it was originally. As soon as it notices something, notices SOMETHING IS *THAT*, then the mind instantly becomes *NOT* THAT. Before, the mind was all that it was, infinite potential. And now it is NOT THAT. “There is a THAT, and I ain’t it. And hey, I’m having an experience; oops, I can’t *be* what I’m *having*, so now there are TWO THATs. And I’m not either one!”

In fairly short order, the mind comes around to deciding what it IS instead of what it isn’t. “I am the thinker!” And this is more of not being – “I am not the not-thinker.”

So this is you. It goes on your whole life simply because that’s what the mind does. It will continue until Shut Down. Unless, unless, well, here is the peculiar thing. One of the things the mind has evolved into doing (infinite potential, remember) is sometimes becoming a YOU that heads into the direction of becoming less, not more, of the YOU it is being. Perhaps it simply noticed it had been creating more “I,” and the more “I” it tried to be, the more trouble it got itself into. Perhaps it merely ran into the notion that being less-I might be more pleasing. Whatever: the mind goes with it; it reverses course and becomes aware of itself being itself. Conscious. Hey, I was wrong, I AM some of those things I was claiming I wasn’t. Hmmm, could I be none of those things I think I am? Can I therefore maybe be even all those things I said I wasn’t? And if I can even ask these questions, is not everything in doubt? And if so, WHO AM I REALLY?

This is where the fear comes in. Some have said this is the ego making a last-ditch effort to stop you from turning it off. But it may be just the unknowingness of not being anything. Ego-fear is a simple survival mechanism which may be easily turned off. Maybe it is not necessary to go through a big project of battling with the ego and working down all its defenses. (This may account for spontaneous awakenings. No one told ’em it would be hard to do, that ego battle. No one told them they couldn’t wake up without twenty years of meditation: so they don’t bother waiting; they just wake up.)

Originally, we were infinite potential, not knowing even that, just the potential of ALL. When somebody wakes up, they often later report that they realize they were all of everything the whole time. I believe even that description is this side of the veil. That is to say, they WERE back at pure potential but then, but then (for some unknown reason), they notice something and blammo, they are something other than ALL. Coming a little further, they notice many things. One of them is the ability to speak, and they say (not from Infinite Potential, but from being very little of an “I”) I AM THAT. They were being Infinite Potential but they are now being just short of that; they are being the “I” that knows it is THAT, but still, being the “I” that is able to say it. A moment before, they were the THAT they refer to, but the THAT was actually even less than a THAT; it was (is) all-that-is, infinite potential, a no-thing. It’s what they were when they started out in life. Which may also be the reason such an I-AM-THAT being “comes back” from revelation; it is being a mind that has a built-in proclivity to notice things. And you know what happens when you notice something. Here you are again!

So there you go. If you become less and less of an identity, you become more and more of the alternative (where you came from) – which, as it turns out, is pretty damn big: All That Is! Infinite Potential! Yikes! And to think, you’ve been looking for yourself!

So where were we? Oh yeah, about not being anything. So once a being is being no-thing, or at least so little of things that it’s just barely worldly enough to operate as a human, it is like pure awareness. It be-s. (Notice that English does not leave room for the word “bes.” You can eat: “He eats.” But you can’t be: “He bes.” Interesting.)

So dig this. The person bes, right? He is not anything, but, say, he looks at a mountain. He’s not Being or Doing anything, right, except being a human being being nothing – except . . . except, all systems are ON. That is, his senses are running, his organic cpu is booted up and functioning in as-a-human-being mode, that is, ready for interaction with things NOT-HIM, or from his point of view (if he had a point of view, but remember, he has not done anything yet, even “notice”), NOT-I. He is receiving information, data is coming in through default pathways and yet his mind has not responded . . . because “his mind” IS the response which may or may not happen due to the influx of information. His brain has aptic structures (such as, his ears connect to brain areas uniquely suited to sorting through signals generated by a human ear), so if sound vibrations strike his ear, it is possible – we may say it is even likely – that signals will begin to pass through the nerve channels to the passive idling brain. It is, we can say, APT to happen. Just as if you let go of an apple, it is apt to fall to the ground.

So there our fellow stands. Light shears from the sun’s surface, travels millions of miles, bounces off an outcrop on the planet Earth, and a minuscule portion of the bouncing light continues across a valley to our friend (our booted-up idle human nobody person) and the light enters the eyes, passing through the cornea, lens, and fluid, and striking the retina (the imperfect organic form of the perfect CCD chip which is in your digital camera). The photon happens to strike precisely in a way to go into a structural part of a rod or cone eye-cell wherein there is nowhere else for it to go, and its energy (the “energy” of its very existence, we could say) sets off a quantum interaction in the cell. (This is the first known area, by the way, where science precisely observes and sees us operating in a quantum way, when quantum bits are triggered by photons in the eye to generate charge potential, and neural cells are apt to create signals when charged, and also pass the potential via a synapse to an adjacent neuron) and a “usual” electrical neuron signal is generated and propagates along the optic nerve. Then another photon, and then another signal, more and more, and soon there is a flow, and the optic nerve begins to flood on towards connection with a brain structure which has its own design, its own aptic structure, and flooded, it accepts the incoming signals, shuffles them around, ignores them as noise or this or that, but finally, at some point, maybe milliseconds, maybe minutes, finally it does what it is structurally most apt to do: it assembles all the signals in a way relative to the pattern of the excited retina, and a theoretic “image” is formed in the cells and neurons of the visual cortex. It has done what humans call “seeing.”

Only, only, nobody has yet seen it, because there is no-one there, remember? Welp, that is about to change, because the brain is an aptic structure too; it is apt to act, do, and think like a human being and so, randomly, it being ready for just about anything a human can be ready for, it experiences the visual cortex’s “I have an image to present,” and the human brain, now starting to “act” or operate, more than simple “idling,” it then accepts the image and POOF BAM – – – MOUNTAIN!

MOUNTAIN IS

now operating, now Being more than just at-ready-idle, he IS the mountain. He HAS to be. He can’t be anything else; he is being no-thing, cannot be anything. All that is happening from a human point of view is the “MOUNTAIN IS” signal is accepted, registered, and essentially IS that human’s experience. So when he sees a mountain, he IS the mountain, which is all-that-is, because that is what he is seeing, being. Ask him “Who are you?” and if he responds spontaneously (instead of noticing he has been asked a question), he will say, “Mountain.” He isn’t even “here”! Nobody home!

Whatever he perceives or apperceives, he is that. It is his ONLY experience and therefore the totality of his experience. HE IS THAT, but he would say, “IAMTHAT,” indicating the mountain, that being all there is.

Now, when such a being is looking at YOU, he bes YOU. And if you look at him, well, what do you see? You’ll see yourself of course, though you won’t see the “who” that you Think you are; you will see what he sees, what you Really are.

This last should neatly explain bodhisattvas, enlightened teachers, the idea of “transmitting” awakening, and a host of other shifts that one can experience with another. You are seeing yourself through another’s eyes, only you don’t realize it’s you, you think it’s Him, and you go, “Oh man, he’s beautiful!” and he sees what you are doing, and compassion fills his face, and boy, do you feel close to him then!

When you see another who is being you, you experience the very thing you’ve been searching for. You think it’s this spiritual person in front of you. But it’s only you. Him being you. You feel like something is going on, some answers are near. You open up to who you really are and look. You become totally present with the reflection which he is being. You begin to reflect what you are seeing. And what you are seeing is what? What you are seeing is the being you are being.

In physics, they put two mirrors on the end of a ruby and energize the ruby to give off light. The light bounces between the mirrors until so much builds up that it breaks through one end as a laser beam.

When one person is totally present with an awakened being who is being the (other) person, anything can happen. And does.

Cool, huh?

Suddenly, on awakening, all the “I” melts away and there you are! Trembling with the knowledge that you are Home.
